RECOMMENDED RESTAURANTS, TAKEAWAYS & CAFES

NORTH HARBOUR BISTRO IN SCALPAY

With an array of 5 star reviews, North Harbour Bistro and Tearoom in Scalpay is a place we have not yet tried, but we understand it’s excellent (but pricey). This restaurant is over an hour away in the car but specialises in local seafood.

Wilderness Scotland named it as one of the country’s top restaurants, stating: ‘A tiny restaurant with a big passion for fresh local produce and a real talent in the kitchen. We have been getting rave reviews from guides and clients alike who have enjoyed stunning dishes with incredible local ingredients’.The Bistro also won Island Restaurant of the Year 2017 and was awarded the Gold Fish Medal 2017.

AN LANNTAIR

AN LANNTAIR is the local Arts Centre in Stornoway town centre (including a cinema). It includes a nice restaurant and cafe for snacks, teas and coffees.

DIGBY CHICK

DIGBY CHICK on Point Street in the town centre offers a lunch menu and, for evening meals, an early bird menu or dinner option. It’s a lovely restaurant for a treat (and the set early bird menu is good value).

THE BOATSHED

THE BOATSHED at the Royal Hotel (turn left and walk for less than 5 minutes) provides delicious food for a special treat (evening meal).

HS1

HS1, also run by the Royal Hotel, offers more reasonably priced lunches and dinners, with a wide range on offer, such as burgers, wraps, and pasta, as well as cocktails.

THE HARRIS AND LEWIS SMOKEHOUSE

THE HARRIS AND LEWIS SMOKEHOUSE for the fish lovers opened in 2018 and is very popular for sit-in meals. It offers a uniquely Hebridean experience with the finest of produce from Scotland's islands as well as their own Smoked Salmon.

KOPI JAVA

KOPI JAVA (turn left and walk for around 3 minutes) is a great wee coffee shop with a selection of home baking and sandwiches. The lattes are lovely!

THE BLUE LOBSTER CAFE

THE BLUE LOBSTER CAFE on the harbour front recently opened and is one of our new favourites. The coffee is lovely and the cakes are even better!

DELIGHTS

DELIGHTS is a lovely family-run cafe and gift shop in the town centre. The baking is AMAZING and the coffee is also very good. There are only two tables though, so it’s not always possible to sit in. The accompanying shop is also excellent, with various local treats and beautiful gifts and trinkets.

ARTIZAN

ARTIZAN on Church Street (turn left and less than a 5 minute walk) is a great choice for lunch. With a delicious menu, great cakes and a lovely gift shop upstairs, it’s well worth a visit.

TAKEAWAYS

There are two Indian takeaways in Stornoway (both also offer sit-in menus) and both are run by the same family. The County Hotel on Francis Street also does an Indian takeaway menu which is very good.

CAMERON’S CHIP SHOP in the town centre and CHURCH STREET CHIP SHOP are both good, with a wide range of different options on the menus.

THE THAI CAFE on Church Street is good for both takeaways and sit in meals. (They do not have a licence to serve alcohol, but you can bring your own alcohol for a small corkage charge).
