Things to do during your stay...

We recommend you make the most of the stunning landscapes and beautiful views, as well as enjoying the wide range of enjoyable things to do on both Lewis and Harris.

Here at The Blue House you are directly across the road from the beautiful Castle Grounds - not only a stunning location for a leisurely stroll - but also home to the unique and grand newly renovated Lews Castle.

LEWS CASTLE & MUSEUM NAN EILEAN

Overlooking Stornoway harbour, the impressive gothic-revival style castle was built in the mid 1800s. Since then, this beautiful building has also served as a hospital during WW2, a college, and a school.

The Castle now includes luxury accommodation as well as a great cafe (Starbucks coffee)/restaurant open to the public, small gift shop and houses a great free museum.

Uncover the island's past and find out how it has shaped the way of life today at the newly redeveloped Museum nan Eilean in Lews Castle. Six of the iconic Lewis Chessmen are on permanent display here, after they were uncovered in Uig on the west coast of Lewis in the 19th century.

CALLANISH STANDING STONES

It's now over 9,000 years since the first people explored and lived on these islands, and there are some stunning reminders left behind. The Callanish Standing Stones are older than Pyramids of Giza, but there are still questions as to what this stone circle was built and used for which you'll find out more about in the visitor centre.

We can recommend the visitor centre’s lovely cafe, which offers reasonably priced meals and snacks.
The stones are located 12 miles west from Stornoway off the A859

CALLANISH ALPACAS

Round the corner (literally) from the Callanish stones is this wonderful croft with alpacas, peacocks, sheep, and goats to name but a few of the animals available. This is our favourite family day out as you get to feed all the animals and hold the smaller ones (and its free for the privilege).

It is such a fun day for children and also adults! There is a new coffee shop here which serves lovely hot drinks, baking and lunches. Feeding is at 11 but it gets busy so phone to book a space or find on facebook; Callanish alpacas.

MORVEN GALLERY

One of our favourite haunts, Morven Gallery, is also on the west side of Lewis, around 10 minutes drive away.

The gallery not only includes great exhibitions, but also includes jewellery and a beautiful little coffee shop with (what we consider to be) the best lattes on the island, and delicious home baking!

The gallery is only open at certain times of the year, so please call them in advance to check before you head out.

GEARRANNAN BLACKHOUSE VILLAGE

We adore Gearrannan Blackhouse Village, a restored traditional crofting township with nine cottages which were lived in until 1974.

Watch the weaving of Harris Tweed, take a leisurely walk and take in the views of the secluded bay of Carloway.

A cafe /restaurant is available at certain times of the year.
